These are a descendant (excuse the pun!) of the Stitch Plate we used in the 70's which were much safer than the waist belay method but they were prone to jamming. These are much easier to use, smoother and lend themselves to the direct belay method. Personally I prefer using these rather than the Italian hitch as they don't seem to cause the rope to kink so much.
